What is a Thurible?
A thurible is a metal censer suspended from chains. Incense is burned during worship services. It is used in the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Old Catholic, and Roman Catholic churches, as well as in Christian and non-Christian Gnostic Churches and in the practice of ceremonial magic. The Altar Server who carries the thurible is called the thurifer.
It is quite simple how the thurible works. Burning charcoal is inside the thurible and incense is placed upon it. There are many different varieties and many different smells. Once the incense has been placed on the charcoal the thurible is then closed and used for censing. The Thurible is then made to swing backwards and forwards so that air can enter through the holes and keep the charcoal burning.
The word thurible comes from the Old French thurible, which is derived from the Latin term thuribulum. The Latin word thuribulum has the root thur, meaning incense. The Latin thur is an alteration of the Greek word thuos, which is derived from the term thuein, meaning to sacrifice.
